Theme/Outline: Three Aspects of our Heavenly Father’s adoption of us that we should understand and rejoice in as His adopted sons & daughters

I. The Past – God chose you to be in His family!

Ephesians 1: 3-6 (NASB)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.

II. The Present – God brought you into His family!!

Galatians 4:1-7 (NASB)
1 Now I say, as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave although he is owner of everything, 2 but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father. 3 So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the world. 4 But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, 5 so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. 6 Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.

III. The Future – God promises the inheritance to His family!!

Romans 8:22-23 (NASB)
22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.

Big Idea: Christians understand and believe that Jesus is God.

6 Claims that Jesus made about Himself which reveal that He is God the Son (equal to the Father):

1. Jesus claimed the Right to Forgive Sins
2. Jesus claimed the Right to Judge Mankind.
3. Jesus claimed the Right to Grant Eternal Life.
4. Jesus performed miracles on His own authority.
5. Jesus accepted worship from others.
6. The Eternal Destiny of Humans depends on their response to Jesus.

Review

1. Elohim (“God”)

    Genesis 1:26 (NASB)

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

2. Adonal (“Lord”)

    Genesis 15:2 (NASB)

2 Abram said, “O Lord God, what will You give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”

3. YHWH (“LORD”)

    Exodus 6:2-3 (NASB)

2 God spoke further to Moses and said to him, “I am the LORD; 3 and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My name, Lord, I did not make Myself known to them”.

Jesus’s “I AM” Claims

John 6:35 – 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.”

John 8:22-24 – 22 So the Jews were saying, “Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 And He was saying to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”

John 8:58 – 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”

John 8:12 – 12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

John 10:7-9 – 7 So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture”.

John 11:25 – 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies”.

John 14:6 – 6 Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me”.

John 15:1,5 – 1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser”; 5 I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

Conclusion: He is worth Seeking.

Isaiah 55:6-7 (NASB)

6 Seek the Lord while He may be found;
Call upon Him while He is near.

7 Let the wicked forsake his way
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return to the Lord,
And He will have compassion on him,
And to our God,
For He will abundantly pardon.
