John 18:1-12 (NASB)

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went forth with His disciples over the ravine of the Kidron, where there was a garden, in which He entered with His disciples.

Now Judas also, who was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often met there with His disciples.

Judas then, having received the Roman cohort and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns and torches and weapons.

So Jesus, knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, went forth and said to them, “Whom do you seek?”

They answered Him, “Jesus the Nazarene.” He said to them, “I am He.” And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.

So when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Therefore He again asked them, “Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus the Nazarene.”

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am He; so if you seek Me, let these go their way,”

to fulfill the word which He spoke, “Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one.”

10 Simon Peter then, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave’s name was Malchus.

11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put the sword into the sheath; the cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”

12 So the Roman cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and bound Him,

John 17:24-26 (NASB)

24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

25 “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me;

26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Theme: Four concluding pronouncements of Jesus’ prayer so that we may take comfort in a hopeful future.

  1. Only Jesus can legitimately express the desire He prays – v.24
  2. Only Jesus has known the Father correctly – v.25a
  3. Only Jesus’ disciples have know Him correctly – v.25b

John 17:20-23

20 “I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;

21 that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that Thou didst send Me.

22 “And the glory which Thou hast given Me I have given to them; that they may be one, just We are one;

23 I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, that the world may know that Thou didst send Me, and didst love them, even as Thou didst love Me.”

Theme: Three reasons why Jesus prays for the disciples’ protection so we are reminded of the persistent dangers of living in the world.

John 17:13-16 (NASB)

13 “But now I come to Thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy made full in themselves.

14 “I have given them Thy word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15 “I do not ask Thee to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.

16“They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.”

Three Reminders:

  1. First is where He is going – to the Father
  2. Next is why He has spoken to them – His joy made full in them
  3. Finally is what He has given them – God’s Word

I. The Hatred of the world – v. 14

II The necessity of remaining in the world – v. 15a

III The opposition of the evil one – v. 15b

Introduction:

5 “But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘ Where are You going? ’

6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.

7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.

8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;

9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me;

10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me;

11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.

14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

15 All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you
(John 16:5-15 NASB)

Introduction:

1 “ These things I have spoken to you so that you may be kept from stumbling.
2 They will make you outcasts from the synagogue, but an hour is coming for everyone who kills you to think that he is offering service to God.
3 These things they will do because they have not known the Father or Me.
4 But these things I have spoken to you, so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them. These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you

Introduction:

Theme: Three words that summarize the world’s disposition toward Christ so you will be prepared for the opposition it brings.
18 “ If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.

19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.

20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘ A slave is not greater than his master. ’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know the One who sent Me.

22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.

23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well.

25 But they have done this to fulfill the word that is written in their Law, ‘ They hated ME without A cause
(John 15:18-25 NASB)

2. The works Jesus had performed for them v. 24

B. The Biblical support for this culpability v. 25

Introduction:
12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.

14 You are My friends if you do what I command you.

15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

16 You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.

17 This I command you, that you love one another
